Richmond: City Hotels and Accommodation
The largest and most comprehensive selection of accommodation can be found in the heart of the city, which is sited around 7 miles / 11 km to the northwest of Richmond International Airport (RIC). Mid-range chain hotels are in plentiful supply throughout the city, although those looking to stay on a budget will find cheap hotels scarce. Most hotels are spread through the following neighborhoods, many of which are within easy reach of the city's acclaimed Canal Walk.
Downtown District
Richmond's downtown district covers a large area of the city and lies alongside James River, with numerous high-rise hotels centered around the Central Business District. Waterfront accommodation is particularly desirable in the downtown area, although views come at a premium. For those looking for budget lodging, the Massad House Motel along North 4th Street is one of the city's few options, offering a central location close to amenities. Court End is a notable part of downtown Richmond, where you will find many Neo-classical houses and ornate architecture.
Carytown
A particularly compact area of Richmond, Carytown is a lively and exciting neighborhood, appealing to the younger generation. Hotels here are close to the number of bars, cafés, entertainment venues and local specialty shops.
Church Hill
One of the most historic areas of Richmond, Church Hill lies close to Shockoe Bottom and is home to a number of grand 19th-century residences and hotels. Characterized by its Victorian architecture and impressive museums, Church Hill is home to the magnificent St. John's Church and offers an elevated position with impressive views of the surrounding cityscape.
Fan District
Based around the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, Richmond's Fan district is a lively neighborhood, with many avenues lined with trees and grand hotels, often located around Monument Avenue. The Fan district also contains a number of grand mansions, which date back to the early part of the 20th century, together with several imposing statues and local landmarks.
Shockoe Bottom District
Connected to downtown Richmond by the city's famous Canal Walk, this neighborhood is split into two main regions by the I-95, next to James River. Hotels in this part of the city are never far from restaurants, charming cobbled streets, nightspots and renovated warehouses, particularly around the waterfront.
